Xy Lee
Xy Lee was a highly influential Hmong American singer and self-taught guitarist who built a globally recognized musical career before his tragic passing in 2019. During his life, he made three highly recognizable contributions to Hmong entertainment:
- Expanding the global reach of Hmong music: He pioneered a massive digital presence on YouTube, gathering over 90,000 subscribers and millions of views to connect the Hmong diaspora worldwide.
- Popularizing contemporary romantic ballads: He modernized Hmong acoustic and ballad styles, performing widely and frequently collaborating with other artists and traditional dancers to preserve cultural storytelling in his music.
- Fostering a collaborative community for future artists: He was known for never turning down an invitation to sing and actively planned to open a recording studio in Fresno to mentor and support emerging Hmong songwriters and musicians.
The bright future of Xy Lee was tragically cut short on November 17, 2019, when he was killed in a senseless mass shooting in Fresno, California. At just 23 years old, the beloved singer was attending a peaceful backyard family gathering to watch a football game when gunmen opened fire, claiming his life alongside three other men. His sudden, violent death devastated fans worldwide and cast a deep shadow of grief over the global Hmong community. While his physical voice was silenced far too soon, the beautiful romantic ballads he left behind continue to echo throughout the diaspora, ensuring his gentle spirit and creative legacy are never forgotten.
