Tou Ger Xiong
Tou Ger Xiong (1973–2023) was a prominent Hmong-American comedian, storyteller, and social justice activist widely regarded as the nation’s first professional Hmong-American stand-up comedian. Born in Laos, he escaped as a refugee with his family and grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, later graduating as class valedictorian from Humboldt High School and earning a political science degree from Carleton College. In 1996, he founded Project Respectism, an educational program using comedy, rap, and traditional Hmong storytelling to educate audiences about the Hmong-American refugee experience, combat anti-Asian racism, and instill cultural pride in youth. Over a career spanning nearly three decades, Xiong gave over 1,600 presentations across 48 states, co-founded "Hmong Day" at the Minnesota State Fair, and was named a Bush Fellow in 2019 for his leadership in civic engagement and cross-cultural bridge-building.
