Dr. Yang Dao
Dr. Yang Dao is widely recognized as the first Hmong person in history to earn a Ph.D., completing his doctorate in the social sciences at the Sorbonne University in Paris in 1972. Born in 1943 in Xieng Khouang Province, Laos, he became a pioneering scholar, government official, and later an influential academic in France and the United States. Before the fall of Laos, he served as Director of Human Resources for the Royal Lao Government and was appointed by the king to the National Political Consultative Council. After fleeing Laos in 1975, he taught in France and eventually resettled in Minnesota, where he joined the University of Minnesota and other institutions as a specialist in Southeast Asian anthropology and Hmong history. Over five decades, he authored foundational works such as Hmong at the Turning Point, Minority Cultures of Laos, and multiple Hmong–French dictionaries, becoming one of the most prolific Hmong scholars of the modern era.
