Diane Moua

Chef Diane Moua is an acclaimed, Le Cordon Bleu-trained executive chef and restaurant owner based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, widely celebrated for her pioneering work in blending high-end French pastry techniques with traditional Hmong comfort foods. Born to Hmong immigrant parents who established a farm in Wisconsin, Moua spent decades working as one of the Twin Cities' most prestigious pastry chefs, steering the dessert programs for elite institutions like La Belle Vie, Spoon and Stable, and Demi. Today, she operates her own highly celebrated establishment, Diane's Place, located in Northeast Minneapolis, where she showcases the bold, comforting flavors of her heritage alongside meticulously laminated pastries.

Throughout his career, Chef Diane has made many contributions to the Hmong community. Here a three highlights:

  1. Pioneering High-End Culinary Representation: She broke significant barriers as a multi-time James Beard Award finalist, proving that a first-generation Hmong-American chef could rise to the absolute pinnacle of the upscale, mainstream culinary industry. Her success carved out a permanent, highly respected space for Hmong chefs in fine dining.
  2. Preserving and Validating Heritage Flavors: By elevating traditional family recipes—such as Hmong pork sausage served on fresh, flaky croissants or ancestral sour pork short ribs—she has preserved oral and culinary history. Her work introduces these complex, authentic profiles to global audiences while demonstrating to younger Hmong-Americans that their cultural food traditions are worthy of the highest international acclaim.
  3. Supporting the Local Hmong Agricultural Economy: In an intentional effort to keep her business a true family and community affair, she directly sources fresh produce and poultry for her restaurant from her parents' 120-acre farm in Wisconsin. This circular economic relationship honors the hard work of the older refugee generation while highlighting the critical connection between traditional Hmong farming and modern gastronomy.

Moua's current career pursuit is focused on running Diane's Place, which has achieved massive national renown, being named Food & Wine's 2025 Restaurant of the Year and selected as one of North America's 50 Best Restaurants. Her immediate future plans involve executing a major physical expansion of her Minneapolis venue. This growth includes doubling the footprint of her current space, introducing private dining rooms, adding a grab-and-go cafe, and launching a renovated 100-seat patio to accommodate a rapidly growing international and local guest base.
